In the realm of medical devices, patient engagement and adherence to treatment plans are crucial for successful outcomes. However, the process of creating reassessment reports was manual and resource-intensive, and patient adherence was low. This set the stage for the Mobile App for Infusion Pump project.

Setting the Scene

The objective was to develop a user-friendly mobile application that empowers patients to set up their infusion sessions with ease, enhancing their engagement and adherence to treatment plans. Additionally, the app aimed to automate the reassessment reports, improving efficiency and accuracy.

Taking on the Role

As the Product Designer, I collaborated closely with the Product Manager, regulation, and business development teams. Together, we aimed to create an innovative solution that would transform patient care.

Discovering the Problem

The company’s CEO envisioned a mobile solution to address the challenges of manual reassessment reports and low patient adherence. We embarked on a road trip with the PM, CEO, VP of Product, and I to interview customers, present mockups, and experiment with mock and real data. These interactions revealed the critical need for a mobile application.

The Design Process

Our research involved market analysis, product benchmarking, expert interviews, and examining other consumer-to-business applications. We adopted an iterative design approach, continuously refining the application based on user feedback.

Key Stages

  • Functional Flow: Developed the functional flow of the application.

  • User Flow: Created the user flow to ensure an intuitive experience.

  • Concept Screens: Designed concept screens and validated them with end users through multiple iterations.

  • Presentation and Development Preparation: Presented the concept to stakeholders and prepared screens for development.

  • Continuous Iteration: Made adjustments as development progressed to meet evolving needs.

Innovative Solutions

The app featured real-time reporting, enhancing the connection between patients and caregivers with instant progress sharing. Caregivers could intervene promptly with immediate insights. Data security was prioritized to ensure patient privacy and compliance. The app’s design was intentionally non-medical, incorporating elements of happiness to engage users.

User Testing and Feedback

Continuous user testing was conducted throughout development. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with partners and patients expressing their approval and satisfaction.

Overcoming Challenges

Educating the market that a fun, engaging design is acceptable in the medical field was a significant challenge. This was a blue ocean market, requiring innovative solutions and a modest approach to learning and adaptation.

The Impact

The results were transformative. The mobile app led to increased infusion pump sales, improved patient outcomes, and disrupted the market by introducing a new standard of care.

Conclusion

The Mobile App for Infusion Pump project was a journey of innovation and engagement. By addressing the critical need for an easy-to-use, real-time reporting tool, we created an application that empowered patients and improved care. This experience demonstrated my ability to design impactful solutions and drive market change, aligning with the company's vision of becoming data-driven and patient-focused.
